Canada Advancing Global Efforts on Mercury Management

Canada has ratified the Minamata Convention on Mercury, joining 40 other countries in committing to domestic strategies for tracking and reducing transboundary mercury pollution, including the management of emissions, point source releases, and contaminated site remediation. Research from the IISD-Experimental Lake Area indicates that reducing mercury inputs into lakes leads to a decrease in mercury levels in freshwater fish consumed by humans.

• Canada has ratified the Minamata Convention on Mercury, joining a total of 41 ratifying countries and 128 signatories. This commitment requires the Canadian federal government to implement domestic strategies to manage mercury emissions, point source releases, exposure, and the remediation of contaminated sites to reduce transboundary pollution.
• Research conducted at the IISD Experimental Lakes Area demonstrates that reducing the amount of mercury pollution entering lakes results in lower levels of harmful mercury in freshwater fish intended for human consumption.
