Canada Advancing Global Efforts on Mercury Management

This briefing notes Canada's ratification of the Minamata Convention on Mercury and highlights research from the IISD-Experimental Lake Area regarding the impact of reducing mercury pollution on fish.

• Canada has ratified the Minamata Convention on Mercury, joining 40 other ratifying countries and 128 signatories. This ratification commits the Canadian federal government to requirements for tracking and reducing transboundary mercury pollution, including domestic strategies for managing emissions, point source release, exposure, and the remediation of contaminated sites.
