• The report proposes three primary legislative reforms to promote virtuous practices in artisanal gold mining: legalizing mechanization during the crushing and processing phases, increasing the role of local authorities for better proximity management, and creating new-generation 'reserved gold panning zones' that incorporate gravimetric processing tools.
• The analysis was informed by the 'clean gold' (or propre) pilot project, which has been conducting technical and social experimentation in three communes in the Ganzourgou province of Burkina Faso since 2018, specifically testing gravimetric gold processing as an alternative to mercury and cyanide.
• The report identifies several areas for improvement within the strategic, institutional, normative, and community frameworks of UEMOA member states, focusing on the definition of artisanal mining, mechanization, environmental protection, taxation, and gold commercialization traceability.
