Mining Project Rehabilitation and Closure Guidelines: Papua New Guinea

This guide provides a framework for the administration, regulation, and monitoring of rehabilitation and mine closure (RMC) obligations for mining operations in Papua New Guinea, emphasizing the need for progressive planning to ensure sustainable post-mining land use.

• Mine closure and reclamation must be planned from the early stages of a project and conducted progressively to maximize beneficial outcomes. Delays or poor early-stage decisions regarding planning and operation can limit future closure options and negatively impact biodiversity, water quality, aesthetics, land fertility, and stability.
