IISD Mourns the Passing of Ciata Bishop, Advisor and Advocate for Responsible Agricultural Investment

The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) issued a statement mourning the passing of Ciata Bishop, an international trade and investment lawyer and advisor who advocated for sustainable investment and the involvement of affected communities.

• Ciata Bishop was an international trade and investment lawyer with extensive experience in government and private sector roles in Liberia, the United States, the Cayman Islands, and Jamaica. In Liberia, she held leadership positions as the Director General of the National Bureau of Concession and the Executive Director of the National Investment Commission.
• Bishop's collaboration with IISD began in 2011 at the fifth Annual Forum of Developing Country Investment Negotiators in Kampala, Uganda, where she was a keynote speaker on Africa's inward investment and sustainable development.
• In the two years prior to her passing, Bishop served as a formal advisor to the IISD agriculture team, contributing to the development of an updated model contract for responsible investment in agriculture.
• Bishop supported the policy-maker community by developing workshops for government officials on international investment agreements, agriculture investor–state contracts, and responsible contract farming, and contributed to IISD's Community of Practice for developing country negotiators.
• Through the "Stories of Change" series, Bishop shared insights on how Liberia managed large-scale agricultural investments during its early post-war years.
