Response to the United States Trade Representative’s Stated Objectives on NAFTA Negotiations: An environmental perspective

This document is a response to the USTR's July 2017 objectives for NAFTA renegotiation, arguing that the process provides an opportunity to integrate sustainable development, improved governance, and environmental standards into the trade relationship between the US, Canada, and Mexico.

• The United States Trade Representative (USTR) published a Summary of Objectives on July 17, 2017, for the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), covering areas such as environmental protection, enforcement mechanisms, market access, investment provisions, and public procurement.
• The renegotiation of NAFTA is viewed as a critical opportunity to update trade provisions between Canada, Mexico, and the United States to better align with a sustainable development agenda and enhance governance structures and standards.
