Making the Leap

This briefing from the International Institute for Sustainable Development argues that Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETPs) in South Africa, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, and Senegal should facilitate a direct leap from fossil fuels to renewable energy, bypassing fossil gas to avoid economic volatility and asset stranding.

• Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETPs) are a funding model designed to help South Africa, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, and Senegal move from fossil energy to clean energy while addressing associated social issues and leveraging parallel investments. Although some of these nations are pushing for a transition via gas, the brief asserts this is "technically unnecessary, economically disadvantageous, and dangerous for the climate."
• Relying on gas for the energy transition would expose the economies of South Africa, Indonesia, India, and Vietnam to price volatility and high costs similar to the cost-of-living crisis seen in European countries, as these nations currently source much of their coal domestically.
• Renewable energy is better suited to addressing the energy access needs of 36.9 million people in JETP countries, particularly in rural areas, due to the modularity of wind and solar and their ability to be installed without expensive grid extensions. Furthermore, investing in renewable infrastructure prevents the stranding of assets and the misuse of capital associated with fossil fuel and gas infrastructure.
