Comprehensive Wealth in Indonesia

This report examines the use of comprehensive wealth as a counterpoint to GDP in Indonesia, analyzing the growth of the country's asset portfolio—including produced, human, natural, financial, and social capital—between 1995 and 2020.

• Indonesia's Comprehensive Wealth Index, which represents the inflation-adjusted per capita value of its comprehensive wealth portfolio, nearly tripled over a 25-year period, rising from IDR 404.3 million (USD 86,100) in 1995 to IDR 1.13 million (USD 240,750) in 2020, with an average annual growth rate of 4.3%.
• There is a discrepancy between the growth of Indonesia's comprehensive wealth and its GDP; real per capita GDP grew from IDR 27.5 million (USD 5,860) to IDR 54.1 million (USD 11,500), a slower rate (2.8%) than the wealth index, suggesting the country is not fully benefiting from its increased wealth.
• Despite being a top producer of various commodities including timber, fish, coal, natural gas, oil, nickel, gold, tin, and copper, Indonesia's aggregate natural resource wealth ranked 14th and its per capita natural resource wealth ranked 79th in 2018.
