The Private Sector in the REDD+ Supply Chain: Trends, challenges and opportunities

This policy paper, produced by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) and the ASB Partnership for the Tropical Forest Margins with support from Norad, examines the role of the private sector within the REDD+ supply chain to identify ways to increase the scope and scale of its involvement.

• Private sector engagement is considered critical for the success of REDD+ because it can provide necessary technical expertise and help bridge the financing gap between the needs of developing countries and available public sector funding.
• Progress toward mobilizing private finance for REDD+ was advanced at the 17th Conference of the Parties through the recognition of market-based approaches and a willingness to diversify funding sources to include bilateral, multilateral, public, private, and alternative options.
• Despite the potential for private sector contributions to mitigate climate change by addressing deforestation drivers, there has been limited effort to identify the specific players, their diverse motivations, their roles, and their levels of expertise.
