Statement from IISD on Canada’s Commitment to Fresh Water in Federal Budget 2022

The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) issued a statement welcoming a CAD 25 million allocation from the Government of Canada in the 2022 Federal Budget to support the IISD Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA).

• The Government of Canada allocated CAD 25 million in the 2022 Federal Budget to the IISD Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA), providing multi-year funding to address freshwater threats such as microplastics and climate change.
• The IISD-ELA, consisting of 58 lakes and watersheds in northwestern Ontario, is described as the only global site where scientists can manipulate real lakes to study human impacts on freshwater. The new funding will support research on oil spills and microplastics, collaboration with Indigenous communities, and efforts to improve the health of the African Great Lakes via the African Center for Aquatic Research and Education.
