Tropic Coffee

This case study evaluates the compliance of Tropic Coffee, a green bean processor and trader in Rwanda, with the Committee on World Food Security’s Principles for Responsible Investment in Agriculture and Food Systems (CFS-RAI).

• Tropic Coffee demonstrates a moderately high level of compliance with principles for responsible investment across seven key dimensions. The company specifically focuses on empowering women by improving their market access and prices to increase income and assisting them in forming savings groups for financial independence.
• Tropic Coffee faces several financial challenges, including competitive rates, the absence of a direct link between the prices obtained for beans and the prices paid to farmers for cherries, the lack of its own dry mill, and a decline in demand for expensive organic coffee caused by global economic uncertainty.
• The case study suggests that Tropic Coffee's board should increase its knowledge of principles for responsible investment and business conduct to establish a more transparent strategy and improved accountability processes.
