Mahembe Coffee

This case study evaluates the compliance of Mahembe, a small Rwandan agribusiness operating as a coffee cherry producer, green bean processor, and exporter, with the Committee on World Food Security’s Principles for Responsible Investment in Agriculture and Food Systems (CFS-RAI).

• Mahembe demonstrates a high level of compliance with responsible investment principles across seven key dimensions, which the study attributes to the company's intentional goal of developing its business in a socially responsible manner.
• Mahembe faces several operational challenges, including the need to access financial resources for scaling, ensuring quality for niche sectors, managing supply amidst an aging farmer population, and identifying well-paying markets for specialty beans.
• The study recommends that Mahembe implement a more formal system for recording policies and procedures, specifically defining principles regarding support for young farmers and the community to ensure that new employees and shareholders maintain compliance with responsible agricultural investment standards.
