RE-ARCTIC: Promoting renewable energy, eliminating fossil fuel subsidies and benefitting communities in the North

The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) presented a vision to the Arctic Council's Sustainable Development Working Group on March 1, 2015, advocating for the acceleration of renewable energy deployment in the Arctic through the removal of fossil fuel subsidies and the implementation of clear long-term policy targets.

• The Arctic possesses significant renewable energy potential across hydro, bio, wind, and geothermal power, with large-scale hydropower already providing up to 75 per cent of electricity in Greenland and contributing significantly to the supply in Russia, Iceland, and northern Norway.
• Despite the availability of successful small-scale and off-grid renewable technologies, regional uptake has been slow. IISD identifies four critical requirements to accelerate deployment: clear long-term targets for investors, the phase-out of fossil fuel subsidies (specifically subsidized diesel) to remove market distortions, the use of public-private partnerships funded via mechanisms like environmental taxes, and market integration across Arctic jurisdictions to reduce costs.
