Manitoba Builds Green

The report argues that transitioning Manitoba's building sector off fossil fuels through deep energy retrofits (DERs) can reduce provincial emissions, lower home energy costs, and spur green industrial growth. It proposes a neighbourhood-level retrofit program and a workforce development strategy to achieve net-zero by 2050.

• Buildings account for approximately 17% of provincial emissions in Manitoba. Implementing deep energy retrofits can mitigate peak demand impacts on the electricity grid and reduce greenhouse gas emissions specifically from natural gas heating.
• Achieving net-zero in the Manitoba building sector by 2050 through the retrofitting of 200,000 homes would necessitate an annual investment of approximately CAD 1.2 billion.
• The report recommends a publicly led, neighbourhood-level retrofit program combined with an industrial and workforce development strategy to create sustainable jobs and ensure a just transition.
