The Social and Environmental Benefits of Manitoba's Community Pastures

This report provides a total economic value (TEV) analysis of community pastures managed by the Association of Manitoba Community Pastures in Canada, highlighting the private and public benefits of sustainable grazing management.

• The ecological goods and services provided by Manitoba community pastures (MCPs) are valued at CAD 13,349,646 annually, calculated using a carbon dioxide price of CAD 25 per tonne. The primary drivers of this value are carbon sequestration and forage production, though the total also includes timber, community development, recreation and hunting, biodiversity, and soil formation.
• The current valuation of MCPs is an incomplete estimate because certain components—specifically long-term carbon storage, pollination, and species at risk—were omitted due to significant variation across landscapes or a lack of sufficient data.
• The author recommends maintaining MCPs because they improve water quality, store carbon, and protect habitat. To better inform policy and sustain these landscapes, the report suggests developing enhanced monitoring systems to quantify public benefits and conducting further research into the relationships between management systems and their values.
