Floating Treatment Wetlands: Keeping our fresh water clean and healthy

This storybook introduces Floating Treatment Wetlands (FTWs), artificial platforms that enable aquatic emergent plants to grow in deep water to improve the quality of freshwater lakes by capturing nutrients and transforming pollutants.

• Floating treatment wetlands (FTWs), also known as islands, are small artificial platforms designed to allow aquatic emergent plants to grow in water depths that are typically too deep for them. These systems create a unique ecosystem capable of capturing nutrients and transforming common pollutants into harmless byproducts, which helps protect lakes from harm.
• Wetlands generally provide benefits for water quality by managing watershed nutrients, treating wastewater and industrial contaminants, and improving the quality of storm water runoff.
• The role of FTWs in cleaning up lakes is currently being explored in Canada and specifically at the IISD Experimental Lakes Area.
