Advancing Netley-Libau Marsh Restoration Efforts: Cattail biomass and nutrient survey of Netley-Libau Marsh

The report examines the role of Netley-Libau Marsh in mitigating phosphorus overloading in Lake Winnipeg. It finds that total phosphorus concentrations in the marsh significantly exceed Manitoba Water Quality Guidelines. The study estimates current phosphorus and nitrogen storage in plants and sediment, suggesting that a 25 per cent restoration of cattail and other marsh plants could increase storage potential by 130 tonnes of phosphorus and 500 tonnes of nitrogen.

• Phosphorus overloading in Lake Winnipeg has led to more frequent algal blooms, with the Red River contributing nearly 60 per cent of the phosphorus entering the lake.
• Netley-Libau Marsh is currently degraded due to dredging, drainage, and water management, resulting in the loss of plant communities and wildlife habitat.
• Average total phosphorus (TP) concentrations in Netley-Libau Marsh measured between 0.39 and 3.53 mg/L in August 2009, which is significantly higher than the Manitoba Water Quality Guidelines limit of 0.025 mg/L.
• Current estimates for total stored phosphorus and nitrogen are 525 tonnes and 1,965 tonnes in plants (including roots and litter), and 230 and 305 tonnes in sediment.
• Increasing the restoration of cattail and other marsh plants by 25 per cent could raise the marsh's phosphorus and nitrogen storage potential by 130 and 500 tonnes, respectively.
