Sénégalaise des Filières Alimentaires

This case study evaluates the compliance of Sénégalaise des Filières Alimentaires (SFA), a small rice miller in Senegal, with the Committee on World Food Security’s Principles for Responsible Investment in Agriculture and Food Systems (CFS-RAI). While SFA shows moderate compliance and strong community loyalty, the report recommends formalizing its responsible investment strategy, improving health and safety enforcement, and adjusting pricing to be more competitive.

• Sénégalaise des Filières Alimentaires (SFA) demonstrates a moderate level of compliance with principles for responsible investment across seven key dimensions. The company is characterized by an inclusive and transparent structure and provides significant contributions to the livelihoods of local businesses, communities, and farmers, which has resulted in strong loyalty from these groups.
• SFA faces several operational challenges, specifically regarding the establishment and maintenance of trust and relationships with stakeholders, securing volumes necessary for financial sustainability, and government-mandated price setting for paddy rice.
• The case study identifies three specific areas for improvement to increase SFA's compliance: increasing rice prices to better align with competitors when feasible, implementing stricter enforcement of staff health and safety procedures, and formally integrating principles for responsible investment into the company's strategy.
