Tackling Coal-Driven Air Pollution in China and India: Lessons learned for Indonesia

This report examines how China and India have addressed coal-driven air pollution to provide policy lessons for Indonesia, emphasizing the role of fossil fuel subsidy reform and the promotion of renewable energy.

• China and India have taken significant steps to increase the share of renewables in their electricity mixes. India has reduced fossil fuel subsidies over a three-year period while increasing renewable subsidies. China launched a 2018 policy to help renewable energy developers reach "grid price parity" with traditional sources by encouraging grid companies to guarantee electricity purchases from pilot projects, lowering transmission fees, and supporting cross-regional deliveries of subsidy-free power.
• For Indonesia, phasing out fossil fuel subsidies and redirecting those savings toward energy efficiency and renewable energy sources would lead to health gains, greenhouse gas emission reductions, and faster achievement of NDC targets.
