ICTs, the Internet and Sustainability: A discussion guide for Rio+20

This discussion guide was created by the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) in June 2012 to encourage debate at the Rio+20 conference regarding the role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and the Internet in sustainable development.

• The IISD argues that the impact of rapidly evolving Internet and ICT technologies on sustainable development is a critical issue that has been largely missing from the Rio+20 agenda, despite these technologies transforming life globally and locally over the 20 years since the first Rio conference.
• The guide proposes that Rio+20 participants should determine the necessary actions to maximize the benefits and minimize the harms that the Internet and other ICTs have on the various components of sustainable development.
