Communications and Awareness Strategies: Raising awareness about the health impacts of coal in Indonesia

This policy brief discusses the need to raise awareness in Indonesia regarding the health impacts of coal-fired power, using successful public awareness campaigns from India and China as models to encourage civil society action.

• In Indonesia, coal is not yet recognized as a primary driver of air pollution, despite the fact that coal is used to produce 60 per cent of the country's electricity and the government continues to invest in and expand coal power plants.
• There is a lack of widespread understanding and recognition in Indonesia regarding the connection between air pollution and various diseases, necessitating efforts to inform citizens of these health hazards to empower civil society to demand health-prioritizing actions.
• Public outcry over air pollution in India and China has led their governments to implement measures to reduce emissions from fossil fuel combustion, which has included the shutdown of some coal power plants.
