Estimate of Natural Infrastructure Public Grant Funding in Canada and in the Canadian Prairies

The report estimates that approximately CAD 98.4 million in combined federal and provincial grant funding was directed toward natural infrastructure in the Canadian Prairies in 2022. Nationally, 16 analyzed funds provide an estimated CAD 346.6 million annually. The analysis highlights that ecosystem restoration receives the most funding, while the Natural Infrastructure Fund is the only program specifically dedicated to natural infrastructure.

• In 2022, the Canadian Prairies (Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba) received an estimated total of CAD 98.4 million in public grant funding for natural infrastructure, comprising CAD 69.3 million from 16 national funds and CAD 29.1 million from nine provincial programs.
• Across Canada, 16 analyzed funds with a national scope provide an estimated annual total of CAD 346.6 million toward natural infrastructure.
• Among the four largest funding programs—the Green Municipal Fund (GMF), the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP) and its COVID-19 Resilience stream, and the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund (DMAF)—funding is heavily skewed toward restored ecosystems (over 57%) and engineered systems (41.1%), while conserved ecosystems receive only 1.7%.
• The Natural Infrastructure Fund (NIF) was the only funding program specifically dedicated to natural infrastructure in the Canadian Prairies in 2022.
