Financial Capital in Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Trinidad and Tobago

This policy brief analyzes financial capital trends in Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Trinidad and Tobago from 1995 to 2020, examining how financial assets and liabilities impact their respective comprehensive wealth indices and offering recommendations for debt management and financial resilience.

• Between 1995 and 2020, financial capital positively contributed to total wealth in Ethiopia and Trinidad and Tobago, whereas it did not do so for Indonesia. However, Ethiopia and Trinidad and Tobago saw a trend toward the end of the period where liabilities began to exceed assets.
• The authors suggest that financial liabilities do not necessarily threaten long-term well-being if they are managed to optimize future returns, and they specifically recommend that Trinidad and Tobago diversify its sources of debt financing to improve financial resilience.
