Finding the Way to Zero

This report summarizes the outcomes of a 2021 virtual workshop series organized by Climate Action Network – Réseau action climat (CAN-Rac) Canada, involving approximately 30 civil society groups to discuss the implications of net-zero in Canada.

• The 2021 workshops identified five primary discussion topics regarding net-zero: the phase-out of fossil fuels and the energy transition, defining the boundaries of the 'net' in 'net zero', priorities for pathway choices and decision making, environmental and climate justice, and the distinction between systems change and incremental change.
• Civil society groups emphasize that achieving net-zero in Canada involves moral and ethical challenges, requiring climate action to be guided by inclusion, equity, and social justice. These groups seek defined boundaries for the 'net' component of net-zero to ensure climate targets are met or exceeded.
