STATEMENT Tax the rich to match global commitments with bold domestic action

A statement by the Institute for Economic Justice and partners calling on the South African government to implement domestic tax reforms for high-net-worth individuals and multinational corporations to align with its international commitments.

• The South African government is urged to implement domestic actions to tax the rich and prevent tax abuse by multinational corporations, coinciding with the G20 Finance Ministers' gathering in KwaZulu-Natal.
• South Africa has made two significant international commitments to fairer taxation: joining the Sevilla Platform for Action (SPA) on taxing High-Net-Worth Individuals (HNWIs) on 1 July 2025 during the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4), and endorsing the UN Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation (UNFCITC) at the 17th BRICS Summit in Brazil.
• Civil society, trade unions, and progressive organisations are advocating for the National Treasury and government to establish progressive tax systems that tax the wealthy rather than the poor to address hunger, inequality, and the funding of public goods.
