The IEJ welcomes the historic G20 South Africa Summit: Leaders’ Declaration

The Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ) issued a statement welcoming the G20 South Africa Summit: Leaders’ Declaration, while noting that the consensus-based nature of the outcome diluted transformative proposals and failed to deliver sufficient progress on climate and development challenges.

• The IEJ views the G20 South Africa Summit as a significant diplomatic achievement for South Africa, noting that the Presidency successfully mainstreamed a progressive agenda including debt sustainability, inequality, AI regulation, the care economy, food price stabilisation, sustainable industrial policy, and critical minerals development.
• Despite the diplomatic success, the IEJ argues that the final declaration represents the 'lowest common denominator' and failed to make sufficient progress on climate challenges and development needs for South Africa and the African continent.
• The IEJ identifies specific areas where the declaration fell short, including climate ambition and finance, gender equality, international taxation, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and financing for development.
• The IEJ calls for further action to reform the G20 Common Framework for developmental debt restructuring, tax multinational corporations and the ultra-wealthy, realign the World Trade Organisation (WTO) with developmental priorities, and increase financing via public development banks to accelerate disaster response and the just transition.
