A historic milestone for South Africa’s G20 Presidency: The ubuntu principles on food security, nutrition, and price volatility

The Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ) issued a statement welcoming the conclusion of the G20 Task Force on Food Security under South Africa's Presidency. The IEJ, acting as a Resource Partner, advocated for structural reforms to address global hunger, food price volatility, and the financialisation of food systems, emphasizing the need for public food stock holdings and agroecological approaches to build climate resilience.

• The G20 Task Force on Food Security identified that global hunger persists despite sufficient food production, with approximately 673 million people affected globally in 2024. Africa is noted as having a particularly severe situation, where more than 20% of the population faces hunger.
• The Task Force examined systemic drivers of food insecurity and malnutrition, specifically highlighting the roles of food price volatility, climate shocks, the financialisation of food systems, and speculative behavior in global markets. These issues disproportionately affect women, youth, and smallholder farmers due to existing inequalities in access to finance, markets, and land.
• To ensure the accessibility and affordability of nutritious food and build resilience against external shocks, the IEJ emphasizes the necessity of strengthening public food stock holdings, implementing regulations, and adopting agroecological approaches for climate resilience.
• As a Resource Partner, the IEJ contributed to the Task Force's agenda and supporting studies in collaboration with FAO, IFAD, UNCTAD, and Professors Jayati Ghosh and Isabella Weber from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. These studies analyzed the impact of market concentration, cross-border financial flows, global trade disruptions, and price stabilisation mechanisms on food security.
