Submission on amendments to the Regulations relating to the Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress issued in terms of the Social Assistance Act

The Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ) and the Socio-Economic Rights Institute (SERI) express concern that proposed amendments to the 2022 Regulations for the Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant only address the expiry date, failing to resolve issues regarding beneficiary exclusion, the low means test, and the inadequate grant value.

• The Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ) and the Socio-Economic Rights Institute (SERI) argue that the proposed amendments to the 2022 Regulations for the Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant are insufficient because they only change the expiry date and ignore critical issues such as the exclusion of many beneficiaries, a low means test, and the inadequate value of the grant.
