UBIC submission: SRD amendments a missed opportunity to fix broken system

The Universal Basic Income Coalition (UBIC) has submitted a response to proposed amendments to the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant regulations, arguing that the changes are insufficient to address systemic failures and ignore a High Court ruling on the grant's exclusionary nature.

• The UBIC argues that the proposed SRD grant amendments fail to address long-standing barriers and the declining value of the grant relative to the cost of living. The grant value of R370 is currently less than half of the R796 food poverty line, and applicants are denied if they have more than R624 in their bank account monthly.
