IEJ submission on the 2023 MTEF

The Institute for Economic Justice (IEJ) submitted proposals to the National Treasury on 19 August 2022 regarding the 2023 Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF), advocating for a shift from debt stabilisation toward a human-rights based and feminist approach to budgeting.

• The IEJ argues that the current fiscal strategy is inconsistent with human-rights based and feminist budgeting principles and proposes a shift in focus from debt stabilisation to tackling poverty, inequality, and unemployment.
• The IEJ identifies four priority areas for the MTEF: the mobilization of maximum resources for rights realization, the implementation of a Universal Basic Income Guarantee (UBIG) to uphold non-retrogression and progressive realization, investment in social infrastructure, and addressing the climate and energy crisis.
