Summary
The IAI Directorate has advanced several strategic mandates between June 2025 and January 2026, including the expansion of its Associate network with the WMO and AGU, and the operationalization of the Indigenous Peoples Advisory Committee (IPAC). Key efforts focused on science diplomacy in preparation for UNFCCC COP30, the launch of transdisciplinary research programs on climate-health and ocean science, and the development of the IAI Science Diplomacy Center. The Directorate also expanded its educational reach through virtual courses on remote sensing and health adaptation, while pursuing new member state adhesion, specifically with El Salvador.
Key insights
- The IAI Directorate has expanded its institutional partnerships by inviting the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Venezuelan Institute for Scientific Research (IVIC) to become Associates, and signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the American Geophysical Union (AGU) on 9 October 2025.
- The Directorate is implementing a science diplomacy strategy to support the UNFCCC COP30, which includes organizing regional training workshops in Brasilia in August 2025 and nominating members of the SAC, SPAC, and IPAC to participate in side events.
- The IAI has operationalized the Indigenous Peoples Advisory Committee (IPAC), developing its rules and procedures (expected finalization by December 2025) and promoting member participation in international events such as the IPCC Expert Meeting in Geneva and the Latin American One Health Congress in Lima.
- The Directorate is advancing a research and training program on the nexus of climate, environment, and health, including a virtual course on Health Adaptation Measures that enrolled 2,718 people and the coordination of the CEH2 projects through the Belmont Forum.
- Efforts to establish a research program on oceans, islands, and coastal systems include the co-development of a GEF8 project proposal called 'SargMarine' involving Colombia, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Jamaica, Panamá, Saint Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago, and a virtual course developed with Chile's CR2.
- The IAI Science Diplomacy Center is fostering regional cooperation through a Ministers’ Conversation Series and the proposed creation of the Andean Scientific Panel (PCA), for which the IAI will serve as manager of a trust fund.
- The Directorate is promoting open science by implementing the IAI Harvard Dataverse and the Database of Scientific Articles and Reports, and signing an MoU with La Referencia to aggregate IAI-funded publications.
