Joint Report of the Science-Advisory Committee (SAC) and the Science-Policy Advisory Committee (SPAC)

The SAC and SPAC conducted joint monthly meetings to coordinate on several regional initiatives, including the development of a Gender and EDI Policy, the establishment of the Science Diplomacy Center, and the creation of IPCC policy briefs for the Latin American and Caribbean region. Key activities included a training program on transdisciplinary research for climate, environment, and health responders, and participation in the Americas Conference on Solar Radiation Modification. The committees recommend that the IAI Directorate establish a formal research and training program on the climate-environment-health nexus and participate in the Hydro-Climate Research Program of the Andes (ANDEX).

• The SAC and SPAC held joint monthly teleconferences during the intercessional period to improve communication and knowledge exchange, discussing topics such as the selection of the new IAI Executive Director, Dr. Anna Stewart Ibarra, and the launch of the Science Diplomacy Center.
• The committees supported the implementation of a Gender, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Policy for IAI Scientific Projects and Capacity Building Activities, including the development of a policy implementation plan.
• A transdisciplinary training program titled “Climate, Environment and Health Responders in the Americas” was conducted in partnership with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Global Consortium on Climate and Health Education (GCCHE) at Columbia University, involving 26 teams and approximately 70 government agency individuals.
• The committees are working on a policy brief regarding water security for the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region, based on the IPCC sixth assessment report.
• The SAC and SPAC contributed to the scoping of a Belmont Forum Collaborative Research Action titled “Amazonia and Tropical Forests: global implications and urgent needed actions,” which is scheduled for launch in 2024.
• The committees participated in and organized several high-level science-policy events, including the Americas Conference on Solar Radiation Modification in Jamaica, the Science Summit of the United Nations General Assembly, and virtual side events at UNFCCC COP 27.
• The report recommends that the IAI Directorate establish a research and training program on the nexus of climate, environment, and health, and participate in the Hydro-Climate Research Program of the Andes (ANDEX) under the Global Energy and Water Exchanges Project (GEWEX).
