Work Plan (July 2013- June 2014)

The IAI Work Plan for July 2013 to June 2014 focuses on institutional restructuring, including the implementation of a tripartite structure with offices in Montevideo, Buenos Aires, and São José dos Campos. Research priorities include the implementation of CRN3 projects to better integrate natural and human sciences, and the continuation of a MacArthur Foundation project on climate change impacts in the tropical Andes. Capacity-building efforts involve training events in Chile and Guatemala, the development of policy briefs on urban responses to climate change in Latin America, and a capacity development program for interdisciplinary research.

• The IAI is implementing a tripartite institutional structure with host country agreements signed with Argentina and Uruguay, and a renewed agreement with Brazil under review. Administrative operations and staff are moving to Montevideo, while offices in Buenos Aires and São José dos Campos are being made operational.
• Research activities for 2013-14 include the implementation of additional CRN3 projects aimed at improving cross-disciplinary work and integrating natural and human sciences to understand the environmental, economic, and social effects of Global Change. Final reporting for the CRN2 program is scheduled for July and August 2013.
• The IAI is conducting specific climate-related research and publications, including a MacArthur Foundation funded project on climate change impacts on biodiversity in the tropical Andes and a joint publication with ECLAC titled “Urban Responses to Climate Change in Latin America,” which will be used to develop policy briefs.
• Capacity building initiatives for the 2013-2014 period include two training events: one on Adaptive Water-Energy Management in the Arid Americas in La Serena, Chile (June 24 – July 3, 2013), and another on Modeling Tools for the study of Complex Human/Natural Systems tentatively planned for early 2014 in Antigua, Guatemala.
