IAI – SBSTA statement

The IAI outlines its efforts to bridge the gap between scientific research and policy-making in the Americas, while identifying key challenges in information flow and communication formats. It suggests that SBSTA can support this by encouraging countries to work more closely with existing regional institutions and improving mechanisms for science-policy dialogue at the national level.

• The IAI employs several strategies to improve communication with its 19 member countries, including collaborating with the Red Iberoamericana de Oficinas de Cambio Climatico (RIOCC), supporting the presence of IAI scientists at UNFCCC expert meetings, and updating reports on capacity-building and training for country representatives.
• The IAI identifies two primary obstacles to effective science-policy communication: the lack of mechanisms to channel scientific data to relevant national stakeholders (such as ministries or disaster preparedness units) and the difficulty in finding the appropriate language and format to present scientific knowledge to policy-makers.
• The IAI argues that SBSTA can enhance the science-policy dialogue by emphasizing the importance of national-level information flow and encouraging countries to maximize the use of existing regional institutions.
