Decisiones de la 31a reunión de la Conferencia de las Partes del Instituto Interamericano para la Investigación del Cambio Global

The 31st meeting of the IAI Conference of the Parties approved the 2023-2024 operating budget and established new research mandates focusing on the nexus of climate, health, and oceans. The meeting also authorized the creation of a Scientific Diplomacy Center, the establishment of an Advisory Committee for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, and the invitation of the University of the West Indies and the Global Change Research Center of the National University of Asunción to join the Institute.

• The Conference of the Parties directed the IAI Executive Directorate to create research and training programs focusing on two specific thematic nexuses: one addressing climate, environment, and health in partnership with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and other partners, and another focusing on oceans, islands, and coastal systems aligned with the UN Decade of Ocean Science.
• The IAI is tasked with increasing the regional capacity to participate in international negotiations by collaborating with parties during multilateral science and policy meetings, such as the UNFCCC COP, the CBD COP, and the UN General Assembly Science Summit, specifically by seeking external funding for delegations of high-level and early-career scientists.
• The Conference of the Parties approved the creation of the IAI Scientific Diplomacy Center and its initial three-year work plan to foster dialogue on scientific policies and collaborations regarding global environmental changes in the Americas.
• To enhance equity and inclusion, the IAI will establish an Advisory Committee for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IP&LC-AC) to provide recommendations on the Institute's Scientific Agenda, Strategic Plan, and annual program.
• The IAI will participate in the Andes Hydroclimatic Research Program (ANDEX) under the Global Energy and Water Exchanges (GEWEX) project of the World Climate Research Programme.
