Sistema de apoyo a las decisiones para la reducción de riesgos en la agricultura Fase II: DSS para la soja en el este de Paraguay y en Rio Grande do Sul

The project introduced seasonal climate forecasts and crop growth models to soybean producers in Paraguay and Brazil to manage risks associated with El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variability. By collaborating with local cooperatives, the project developed an internet-based climate information system using a probabilistic approach to help farmers make informed decisions regarding planting dates and variety selection. The initiative gained strong producer support, leading three cooperatives to fund weather stations.

• The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the primary driver of interannual climate variability in the region, where El Niño causes excess precipitation in subtropical southeast South America, while La Niña reduces precipitation in southern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, and central Argentina.
• To mitigate production risks, the project utilized crop growth models to evaluate adaptive management options, such as varying planting dates and selecting different soybean varieties, based on different ENSO scenarios.
• The project determined that providing reliable, science-based information for informed decision-making is most effective when climate-based decision support systems are developed in close cooperation with local cooperatives.
• The decision support system employs a probabilistic approach rather than providing definitive 'yes-no' answers to climate forecasts.
• The project received significant support from producers, resulting in three cooperatives committing funds to purchase weather stations to provide weather information to their members.
