El Programa de becas en Ciencia, Tecnología y Política (STeP)

The STeP fellowship is a two-year professional development program for early-career scientists and policymakers in the Americas. It focuses on three training pillars—Scientific Diplomacy, Communication, and Leadership—to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and policy-making. The program fosters an Inter-American Network of fellows, mentors, and institutions to address global environmental change and sustainable development.

• The STeP program provides a two-year professional development and mentoring framework based on three core training pillars: Scientific Diplomacy, Communication, and Leadership. Scientific Diplomacy focuses on the intersection of science, technology, and innovation with national and regional policy to address global environmental change; Leadership emphasizes transdisciplinary approaches and co-design processes; and Communication focuses on synthesizing scientific information for non-specialist audiences to inform policy.
• The program targets early-career professionals, primarily post-doctoral scientists (within seven years of their PhD) or those with a master's degree and five years of experience, as well as early-career policymakers in government or private agencies. Fellows are placed within host institutions in IAI member countries, such as ministries, public agencies, foundations, or private sector entities.
• As of 2020, the STeP program has involved 66 fellows across 14 countries. It establishes an Inter-American Network that connects current and former fellows with researchers, mentors, and strategic partners to share knowledge and experiences at the science-policy nexus.
