El Programa de becas en Ciencia, Tecnología y Política (STeP)

The Science, Technology and Policy (STeP) fellowship program, implemented by the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI), is a two-year professional development initiative designed to bridge the gap between scientific evidence and public policy regarding global environmental change across the Americas.

• The STeP program provides a two-year professional development and mentoring curriculum focused on three primary training pillars: Scientific Diplomacy, Communication, and Leadership. Scientific Diplomacy aims to help fellows navigate the intersection of science, technology, and innovation with national, foreign, and regional policy to address global environmental change. Leadership focuses on transdisciplinary (TD) approaches and co-design processes with diverse stakeholders. Communication training focuses on synthesizing scientific information for non-specialist audiences to inform policy and practice.
• The program targets early-career scientists and policymakers who are citizens or residents of IAI member countries. Eligible scientists include those in their final year of a PhD, those within seven years of completing a doctorate (or equivalent such as EdD, DVM, MD, JD), or those with a master's degree and at least five years of relevant professional experience. Fellows are placed in host institutions within IAI member countries, which may include government ministries, public sector agencies, private sector entities, or foundations.
• STeP establishes an Inter-American Network that connects current and former fellows with researchers, mentors, and strategic partners to share knowledge and experiences at the science-policy nexus. As of 2020, the program involved 66 fellows across 14 countries.
