Programa Piloto del IAI de Fellowships de Ciencia, Tecnología y Políticas (STeP)

The IAI's STeP Pilot Fellowship program aims to equip scientists and policymakers in Latin America and the Caribbean with skills in science diplomacy, communication, and leadership. The program focuses on creating a common language between scientific and policy communities through a two-year professional development curriculum and the establishment of an Inter-American network for knowledge exchange and multinational collaboration.

• The STeP program is the first national-level Science, Technology and Policy Fellowship implemented in Latin America and the Caribbean, modeled after the AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships.
• The professional development framework is built upon three core pillars: science diplomacy, communication, and leadership, with the goal of creating a 'training of trainers' (ToT) model to build regional capacity.
• The program's training activities for 2020-2024 include specific modules such as 'Introduction to science diplomacy in LAC', 'How to write an effective policy brief', and 'Leadership for sustainable development'.
• The leadership pillar emphasizes a transdisciplinary (TD) approach to solve problems related to global change and sustainable development, noting a current lack of consensus on TD research within the Latin American and Caribbean context.
• The program is currently operating with cohorts in Argentina and Mexico, with plans to expand to Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Trinidad and Tobago for 2021.
• The networking strategy aims to create an Inter-American platform to foster multinational collaborations between host organizations and countries, and to track the professional impact of alumni and mentors.
• Strategic partnerships have been established or are in progress with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Mitacs Canada, and the International Network for Government Science Advice (INGSA).
