ADAPTE Adaptation to the health impacts of air pollution and climate extremes in Latin American cities

The ADAPTE project provides interdisciplinary expertise to help Latin American city authorities plan for the health impacts of air pollution and extreme weather, focusing on quantifying exposure, understanding vulnerability, and assessing adaptation.

• Inhabitants of Bogotá, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, and Santiago face high risks from air pollution, with suspended particles exceeding World Health Organization (WHO) standards by approximately 90% and nitrogen oxides exceeding them by up to 73%.
• The interaction between weather and pollution on human health varies by city and season: respiratory mortality risk is highest during the warm season in Mexico City and Buenos Aires, while in Bogotá, children are most affected during the cold season and elderly people face high cardiovascular mortality during the warm season.
• Population susceptibility to hazards is determined by age, sex, and income levels, with citizens in poorer districts of Bogotá being more vulnerable, particularly during the cold season.
