PRIMERA REUNIÓN DE LA JUNTA ASESORA DEL CENTRO DE DIPLOMACIA CIENTIFICA

The IAI's Science Diplomacy Center (SDC) Advisory Board met in Uruguay in November 2022 to define the Center's strategic framework. The Center aims to facilitate regional collaboration on global change challenges, specifically prioritizing 'Climate Action' as a common ground for member states. Key recommendations include developing a Strategic Communication Plan to provide policymakers with jargon-free scientific reports and exploring sustainable funding through grants, donations, or matching fund structures. The Center will also seek synergies with the Science, Technology and Policy (STeP) fellowship program to build regional capacity in science diplomacy.

• The Science Diplomacy Center (SDC) has established a vision to maintain a "pacífica y sostenible" Americas through transdisciplinary collaborations, with a mission to create a knowledge center for science diplomacy that is "abiertos, justos y equitativos" to address global change challenges.
• To ensure immediate and achievable results, the Center's initial initiatives will focus on 'Climate Action', which was identified as a priority via the IAI Regional Assessment. Secondary focus areas under this priority may include oceans, food security, and disaster risk reduction and management.
• The Center identifies a need for science diplomacy mechanisms tailored to the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) context rather than relying on "ejemplos estándar del Norte Global". This includes a requirement for a Strategic Communication Plan to produce reports for decision-makers that are "comprensibles y digeribles" and free of scientific jargon.
• Proposed sustainable financing strategies for the Center include seeking funds from IAI Associates and Parties via grants, contracts, donations, or an endowment fund, as well as a "estructura de fondos de contrapartida" for shared-cost initiatives.
• The Center intends to integrate with the Science, Technology and Policy (STeP) fellowship program to expand regional expertise in science diplomacy and may collaborate with universities to provide formal education and mentoring.
