SCIENCE DIPLOMACY CENTER FIRST ADVISORY BOARD MEETING Executive Summary Report

The IAI Science Diplomacy Center (SDC) held its first advisory board meeting in November 2022 to define its mission, vision, and goals for enhancing science diplomacy in the Americas. The board identified 'Climate Action' as a primary initial focus area and recommended the development of a Strategic Communication Plan to provide decision-makers with digestible, non-technical scientific information. The SDC aims to operate as a knowledge hub and leverage the STeP Fellowship Program to build regional capacity, while exploring sustainable funding through grants, donations, or matching fund structures.

• The board recommends a Strategic Communication Plan (SCP) to create region- and country-specific materials, such as policy briefs, that avoid scientific jargon to better serve policy officials and decision-makers.
• The SDC intends to integrate with the IAI Science, Technology and Policy (STeP) Fellowship Program to nurture regional expertise and use fellow projects as models for delivering quick, tangible science diplomacy results.
• Proposed funding strategies for the Center's long-term operation include requesting grants, contracts, donations, or an endowment fund from IAI Associates and Parties, as well as considering a matching fund cost-sharing structure.
