Reunión Task Force de Comunicaciones del IAI 15 y 16 de Abril de 1999 – Miami – USA

This report details the outcomes and recommendations of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) Communications Task Force meeting held on April 15-16, 1999, in Miami, USA. The group evaluated communication achievements from June 1997 to April 1999 and proposed strategies to improve the IAI's visibility, digital presence, and publication efficiency.

• Between June 1997 and April 1999, the IAI implemented several communication tools to increase its prestige and promote understanding of global change. These achievements include the creation of an independent homepage, the publication of two annual reports (with the 98-99 report in preparation), the production of brochures and information sheets linked to scientific activities, and the translation of the Montevideo Agreement into four languages.
• The Task Force recommended that the IAI Directorate establish a dedicated Communications Officer and that the Task Force itself extend its mandate for one more year. This extension is intended to design a long-term communications strategy and implement mechanisms to evaluate the actual impact of the information disseminated.
• To reduce costs and improve efficiency, the Task Force proposed investigating the possibility of editing and publishing the annual report in Brazil, while also seeking editing support from specialized companies in the USA and Canada. The goal was to publish the next annual report by December 1999.
• The IAI planned to enhance its digital presence by improving the homepage, linking it directly to the newsletter, and ensuring it is listed in major research site directories such as Yahoo and AltaVista. The Data Information System (DIS) coordinator was tasked with improving the homepage format and integrating an online subscription form for the newsletter.
• Regarding the IAI Newsletter, the editor planned a reader survey in issue number 19 to gather feedback on design and content and to determine preferred delivery methods (email, homepage, or mail) to reduce distribution costs. For the current year, the Task Force approved publishing three issues of 36 to 48 pages each, noting that four issues would be difficult due to a lack of timely information.
