MEMORANDO DE ENTENDIMENTO (MdE)

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on December 7, 2023, between the Foundation for Research and Innovation of the State of Santa Catarina (FAPESC) and the Executive Directorate of the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) to collaborate on science, technology, and innovation, specifically regarding global environmental change.

• The primary objective of the MoU is to establish collaboration in Science, Technology, and Innovation, utilizing the expertise of both signatories to create projects and programs that advance knowledge and sustainable economic development. The focus is specifically on "pesquisa transdisciplinar, capacitação e interface ciência-política e política-ciência sobre mudanças ambientais globais e seus impactos sobre o bem-estar humano e em todos os sistemas de vida."
• The signatories agree to several common contributions, including identifying mutual scientific interests to "cocriar projetos inovadores de investigação e desenvolvimento", strengthening knowledge transfer through the mobility of students and researchers, and organizing courses and fellowships to support resilient and sustainable development.
• The agreement includes a commitment to support funding opportunities for regional and global transdisciplinary research, specifically mentioning priority themes within the "Fórum Belmont e outros mecanismos flexíveis de financiamento da ciência".
• The MoU establishes that there will be no transfer of financial resources between the parties; all expenses, such as personnel and travel, will be covered by the "dotações específicas constantes nos orçamentos dos Signatários".
• Regarding intellectual property, the parties agree that data and publications resulting from the agreement should be "livre e abertamente disponíveis", provided there is proper attribution of authorship and sponsorship.
• The MoU has a validity period of four years starting from its publication in the Official Gazette of the State of Santa Catarina and can be extended via an additive term.
• A Joint Steering Committee will be established to oversee the coordination of activities and evaluate progress, with each signatory appointing "dois representantes para este Comitê".
