Política de Acceso Abierto a Datos y Publicaciones

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) has updated its Open Access Policy for Data and Publications (approved May 2025) to strengthen its commitment to FAIR and CARE principles and expand open access requirements to include both research data and publications generated by IAI-funded projects.

• The IAI's updated policy aims to ensure that research data produced by its funded projects are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable (FAIR). This includes the use of persistent identifiers like DOIs, machine-readable metadata, and the preference for non-proprietary file formats.
• For research involving indigenous peoples and local communities, the IAI implements the CARE principles (Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, and Ethics). This requires ensuring tangible benefits for indigenous collectives and obtaining free, prior, and informed consent.
• The policy expands open access requirements to include publications. IAI-funded researchers are encouraged to use open access journals and must deposit an electronic copy of the author-accepted manuscript in the IAI Open Access Repository.
• The IAI requires research teams to prepare a Data Management Plan (DMP) before project start. The Institute provides a Guide and Template for DMPs and may require them for specific programs to ensure data is planned and managed throughout the project lifecycle.
• Data sharing is mandated at specific intervals, such as at the end of the first year for multi-year projects, though Principal Investigators may request initial exclusive use periods. The IAI recommends sharing data at the time of publication of the describing article.
• The IAI utilizes the Harvard Dataverse as its primary repository for quantitative and qualitative datasets, while recommending the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) for biodiversity-specific data using the DarwinCore standard.
• The implementation of the 2025-2030 plan depends on external financial resources from donor Parties, development banks, and foundations. The IAI may provide financial support for reasonable costs associated with data management, preservation, and hosting on a case-by-case basis.
