SAC, SPAC and IPAC Advisory Committees Statement Confirming Support for the IAI

A statement from the Chairs and Vice-Chairs of the IAI's Scientific, Science Policy, and Indigenous Peoples Advisory Committees expressing their continued support for the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) following the United States' intent to withdraw from the organization.

• The Chairs and Vice-Chairs of the IAI's three Advisory Committees (Scientific, Science Policy, and Indigenous Peoples) express their commitment to the continuation of the IAI following a notification on 8 January 2026 regarding the United States' intent to withdraw from the institute.
• The IAI is described as a strategically vital intergovernmental space for the Americas to address the 'three planetary crises' of pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change, as well as increasing environmental, economic, and social vulnerability.
• Since its inception in 1992, the IAI has funded collaborative research projects across 19 countries, involving over 120 institutions and resulting in hundreds of policy-informing publications. Additionally, it has held capacity-building workshops involving more than 40 disciplines.
• The Advisory Committees identify climate and health, energy transition implications, and biodiversity loss and its economic effects as critical areas for future research requiring regional stewardship and cooperation.
