The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has approved the USD 10.9 million SargMarine project to improve sargassum management in the Caribbean, with execution expected to start in August 2026. The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) will lead Component 2, focusing on enhancing prediction models, early warning systems, and the integration of science into decision-making for the tourism, fishing, and coastal management sectors across seven countries, including Colombia, Jamaica, Panama, and the Dominican Republic.

• The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has formally approved the 'SargMarine' project, titled 'Promoción de la gestión integrada del sargazo: desarrollo de sectores turísticos y pesqueros resilientes mediante la conservación de los ecosistemas marinos en los países del Caribe', with a total financial allocation of USD 10.9 million. The project is expected to begin execution in August 2026, with the Organization of American States (OAS) serving as the executing agency following approval by the Special Funds Committee of CAF - Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean.
• The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) will lead Component 2 of the SargMarine project. This component aims to strengthen regional and country-driven coordinated planning and response mechanisms for sargassum strandings in the Caribbean. Specifically, Component 2 focuses on improving the accuracy, lead time, and geographic coverage of sargassum prediction models and early warning systems; increasing the accessibility and adoption of these tools by end-users in coastal management, fishing, and tourism sectors; and integrating scientific knowledge into national and regional decision-making processes.
