The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) announced the official launch of the Science, Technology, and Policy (STeP) Fellowship Program on June 11, 2020, following a decision made at the 27th meeting of the Conference of the Parties in Brasilia in 2019.

• The IAI officially launched the pilot phase of the Science, Technology, and Policy (STeP) Fellowship Program on June 11, 2020. The initial pilot focuses on the private sector through a collaboration with the Regional Agricultural Experimentation Consortia (CREA), featuring three postdoctoral scientists working at the science-policy interface in the agricultural sector. These fellows are jointly funded by CREA and the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research (CONICET) in Argentina.
• The STeP program aims to enhance human and institutional capacities within IAI member countries to provide expert scientific advice to policymakers regarding sustainable development and global change. It is modeled after the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Science, Technology, and Policy Fellowships (STPF), which has been used in industrialized nations to integrate scientific knowledge into policy formulation.
• STeP fellows are placed in private or government host organizations to facilitate the integration of scientific knowledge into decision-making processes. The program provides professional development in leadership, communication, and science diplomacy, while creating a multinational network for sharing best practices across the Americas.
• While the first pilot is in Argentina, the IAI is in advanced negotiations with two other member parties to implement additional pilots. These future pilots may address policy issues including public health, cities, resilience, natural disasters, tourism, governance, indigenous communities, and agriculture.
