The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) issued a notification on March 9, 2020, calling for nominations to fill five vacancies on its Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) by May 1, 2020. The vacancies resulted from the expiration of terms for four members (from Mexico, Brazil, and Ecuador) and the resignation of one member from Brazil. The SAC is a 10-member body responsible for guiding the IAI's scientific agenda and peer review processes, requiring members to have high academic excellence, a PhD, and expertise in the realities of the Americas.

• The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) consists of ten members elected by the Conference of the Parties for three-year terms, with a maximum of one re-election. The composition includes six members nominated by the Parties, three nominated by the SAC itself, and one nominated by the Institute's Associates.
• The SAC is responsible for several governance and scientific functions, including formulating recommendations on the IAI's Scientific Agenda and annual program, managing the peer review system, creating specific scientific committees, and evaluating the Institute's scientific results.
• Five vacancies in the SAC were identified for 2020: two members nominated by the Parties (Dr. Tereza Cavazos of Mexico and Dr. Carlos Alfredo Joly of Brazil) and two nominated by the SAC (Dr. Antonio Magalhaes of Brazil and Dr. Michelle Grunauer of Ecuador) were reaching the end of their terms in June 2020. Additionally, the Associate-nominated member, Dr. Moacyr Araujo of Brazil, resigned in March 2020.
• Nominations for the SAC vacancies were requested by May 1, 2020, to be decided during the CoP-28. Candidates must possess a PhD or equivalent, a strong record of international scientific research and publications, experience in interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary science, and knowledge of the social, economic, political, and ecological realities of the Americas.
