Food Security and Climate Change Collaborative Research Action (CRA)

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) is facilitating the participation of Latin American and Caribbean funding agencies in a Collaborative Research Action (CRA) on Food Security and Climate Change. This joint initiative, involving the Belmont Forum, the European Commission, and the EU Joint Programme Initiative (JPI) FACCE, aims to develop climate-resilient food value chains and assess the impacts of climate change on food systems across Europe, Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean. The program seeks to provide scientific knowledge to support Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), with the European Commission providing matching funds for eligible participating agencies.

• The Collaborative Research Action (CRA) focuses on the interactions between climate change and food systems, specifically assessing how climate change affects markets and the development of sustainable, resilient food value chains influenced by changing diets.
• The initiative targets three specific regions—Europe, Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean—because these areas are vulnerable and dependent on agriculture, with climate change expected to impact food security, economies, and crop yields.
• The European Commission has dedicated 21 million euros for the ERANET Cofund call across three topics, with the climate change topic estimated to receive between 4 and 5 million euros.
• In Latin America and the Caribbean, the CRA aims to bridge a gap in previous IAI research by connecting meteorological and land use changes directly to food security impacts.
