Food Security and Climate Change Collaborative Research Action (CRA)

The Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) is facilitating a joint call for the Food Security and Climate Change Collaborative Research Action (CRA), organized by the Belmont Forum and the European Commission. The initiative seeks to fund inter- and transdisciplinary research projects that assess the impacts of climate change on food systems, markets, and value chains, with a specific regional focus on Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Europe.

• The Collaborative Research Action (CRA) aims to assess how climate change affects food systems, specifically focusing on the consequences for markets and the development of sustainable, resilient food value chains influenced by changing diets.
• The initiative targets three specific regions—Europe, Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean—because these areas are vulnerable and dependent on agriculture, with climate change expected to impact food security, economies, and crop yields.
• The European Commission (EC) has dedicated 21 million euros for an ERANET Cofund call across three topics, with the climate change topic estimated to receive between 4 and 5 million euros.
• In Latin America and the Caribbean, the CRA aligns with the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) "Plan on Food Security, Nutrition and Hunger Eradication 2025", which serves as a roadmap to achieve zero hunger by 2025.
• The IAI intends to use this CRA to bridge a gap in its previous research; while its Third Round of Collaborative Research Network (CRN3) addressed land use change and meteorological aspects, it lacked a direct link to food security.
