NOTIFICATION

This notification from the Inter-American Institute for Global Change Research (IAI) presents a draft outline for a new IAI Strategic Plan. The plan is designed as a 25-year roadmap to coordinate research and policy actions addressing global change in the Americas, organized around three primary themes: meeting the needs of member Parties, advancing a science agenda for regional sustainability, and ensuring the organizational sustainability of the IAI.

• The IAI Strategic Plan is intended to serve as a "Roadmap for the next 25 years" to coordinate activities, prioritize limited resources, and support the creation of science-informed policies.
• The draft plan is structured around three main themes: Meeting the needs of the Parties, Science for the Sustainability of the Americas (the IAI Science Agenda), and the Sustainability of the IAI.
• The IAI Science Agenda identifies five priority goals for regional sustainability: food security, water security, energy security, health and wellbeing, and biodiversity and ecosystem services.
• Regarding biodiversity and ecosystem services (BES), the IAI aims to develop restoration models for degraded areas as a climate change mitigation strategy and produce evidence to help meet Aichi Target 11 by increasing protected areas.
• The plan incorporates several cross-cutting elements for every goal, including the provision of open data and science, capacity building to improve the science-policy interface, and creating opportunities for women, girls, and Indigenous Peoples.
• To ensure organizational sustainability, the IAI seeks to diversify its funding beyond the NSF through endowments and partnerships with IGOs, donors, and countries outside the Americas, specifically mentioning Belgium, Denmark, France, Portugal, and Spain.
• The Strategic Plan is designed as a living document to be reviewed at minimum every three years, or sooner if requested by the IAI Executive Director or the Parties at the Conference of the Parties (CoP).
