• The 26th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the IAI (CoP-26), held from 20 to 21 June 2018, resulted in the adoption of 45 Decisions. These decisions established a program of work across various topics and were attended by 12 Parties to the IAI, alongside observers from civil society, non-governmental organizations, and non-Party states.
• CoP-26 addressed the financial sustainability of the IAI by adopting a long-term funding strategy and a long-term communications strategy. Decisions were also made regarding the core budget for the 2018-2019 fiscal year and preliminary requests for 2019 to 2021. The IAI Directorate was instructed to monitor Parties with pending contributions by sending reminders twice a year to permanent missions in Montevideo, Uruguay, and to initiate discussions with those pending for three or more years.
• The meeting established an open data policy and principles guidelines to facilitate access to information and data from IAI-supported activities. Additionally, a Decision was adopted to draft a new IAI strategic plan to enhance the scientific agenda and ensure financial sustainability.
• The Conference of the Parties elected new members to the Executive Council for the 2018-2020 term, including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, the United States, and Uruguay. Uruguay was elected as the Chair of the Executive Council, while nationals from Argentina were elected to the Standing Committee for Rules and Procedures and the Financial and Administrative Committee.
• The meeting emphasized inclusivity regarding local communities and indigenous peoples, highlighted by a presentation from Guatemala on the relevance of Mayan science and culture to the IAI's scientific agenda.
